I knew that this summer I wanted to support my skin with a homemade dandelion salve and dandelion lip balm. With everything closed and with no gardener or time to manicure yard myself for several months in 2020 (hello corona quarantine) our yard became abundant in dandelions. And our rose bushes were budding and blooming like crazy. The base of dandelion salve is dandelion oil, and this is the recipe I used with great success!

All you need for this infusion and recipe is some fresh organic rose petals and dandelions and carrier oil of choice. Because I use this on my skin, I personally wanted to use a carrier that is non-comedogenic. I infused my dandelions and rose petals in hempseed oil. Because noncomedogenic oils don’t clog pores, they’re a great tool to use on many types of skin, and the other members in your home, whether your skin type can be categorized as dry or oily. A non-comedogenic oil is also wonderful as your main ingredient for massage oil, and may also reduce fine lines and wrinkles on dry skin.

Dandelions and skincare

  • Antioxidants: High in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, makes dandelions a great topical treatment for fighting free radicals and the signs of aging skin.
  • Minerals: Dandelions contain potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. The root is particularly rich in mineral concentration. These minerals will hydrate the tissues and support the functions of the skin.
  • Vitamins: Vitamin A, B6, C and K all help support the skin's function and help fight free radicals.
  • Antifungal and Germicidal: The milk or sap from the stem of the flower is useful in treating skin diseases which are caused by microbial or fungal infections. It's high alkaline levels help fight off infection in the skin's tissues, including itching, eczema and the bacteria that promotes acne. Source.

Harvesting and cleaning dandelions for your oil

Dandelions are easily identifiable and abundant. They're notoriously easy to harvest and simple to clean and use.

I like the harvest my dandelions from my own garden.  We're lucky to have a garden where they grow abundantly, without fertilizer, however we also don't have pets. Make sure you've located a safe space that's free of fertilizer and that is not visited by dogs. 🙂

To harvest the entire plant from root, use a weeding fork. Angel the fork about an inch into the soil to loosen the root, and then carefully pull the entire plant from the ground. Shake free from dirt and remove any damp or slimy leaves.

Cleaning dandelions

Run dandelion crowns and green through water, while carefully opening their crowns to be sure you've removed any dirt and pests.

If you're using fresh dandelion root, peel the "skin" as if it were a carrot, and clean it well. Then you can slice it exactly like you would a carrot. Give it a try, it's delicious!

One great way to use this carrier oil is to enhance your lip balm, I have a recipe here! Or add some into your soaps for soft, smooth skin. Try it in these calming coconut shea butter moisturizing bars with essential oils for soft skin at bedtime! And of course, you need to try this ultra-nourishing and healing dandelion salve! You could also use this carrier oil in any of your homemade essential oil rollers!
