Growing up in the ’90s, oats and milk were considered health foods. Isn’t it strange how the things you subconsciously know and remember to promote wellness turned out to be the worst offenders of the 2010s? Foods such as oats, breakfast cereals, yogurt, even fruits are “unhealthy,” thanks to their carb or dairy content. In 2020, we still enjoy eating oatmeal, but if you don’t, not to worry. This is a simple, calming oatmeal goatmilk soap bar recipe, where you can utilize your beloved oats, whether you eat them or not.
These calming soap bars are like a warm, cozy bowl of oatmeal in the morning. They are energizing and aromatic, with a hint of warming cinnamon, and calming thanks to their neutral color and skin soothing ingredients. As their scent fills your steamy shower, they make you feel nostalgic for a big bowl of apple cinnamon porridge.
Oatmeal baths are an age-old tradition. I remember taking them as a child when I needed relief from itchings, such as chickenpox or poison ivy. With a bulk batch of oats in the house, I thought – why not take advantage of their properties more regularly? And did you know many stores carry oats in bulk, so you can buy them plastic-free? Next time you’re in your local grocery store, check to see if you can find them.
Oatmeal:
Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve dry skin. Saponins, the natural compounds found in oats, are valued for their cleansing as natural gentle exfoliators. They also provide antioxidants to your skin. For effective treatment, oats need to be ground in your blender, coffee grinder, or food processor and turned into colloidal oats. Beeswax:
Beeswax keeps these bars firm and long-lasting while also reducing chapped skin. Beeswax is exceptional in soaps as it’s antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory, being a real bonus in chilly winter months.
Goatmilk:
Goatmilk is rich in selenium, vitamin A and lactic acid ( an AHA – alpha hydroxy acid), which are beneficial for dry skin. AHAs are wonderous for keeping skin youthful. In this recipe, I use goatmilk cubes as my soap base. I recommend buying your bases cubed so that they’re easy to cut and melt.
Cinnamon bark:
I used my beloved cinnamon bark essential oil to add a natural scent to my soap bar, but it also doubles as an ideal tool for improved circulation and evening skin tone. It is also antifungal and antibacterial.
Jojoba oil:
Jojoba oil reduces dryness and redness, thanks to its rich vitamin E and B complex vitamins.
