Sharing is caring!

A simple fun way to introduce aromatherapy to children. This aromatherapeutic playdough recipe with minimal ingredients, that calms your little one as they experience sensory play. Naturally colored with berries and naturally scented with real lavender and lavender essential oil.

I have two children, ages seven and two - and both of them really enjoy cutting shapes with playdough. This nontoxic playdough recipe is made of simple ingredients that you probably have in your pantry right now, and there are endless possibilities for natural play dough aromas and colors.

Some color and aromatherapy ideas:

  • Blueberries (purple color) lavender (essential oil)
  • Matcha green tea (green color) peppermint (essential oil)
  • Tumeric powder (yellow color) lemon (essential oil)
  • Beet root powder (pink color) grapefruit (essential oil)

Why we love making our own aromatherapy playdough

-It's a great homeschool activity.

-Making our own playdough is something so simple to make that it can be made in less than five minutes without any mess.

-It lasts for months and is made from simple pantry staple ingredients.

-It's not bought in little plastic containers, making it a more sustainable option.

-It's naturally colored with plants.

-It's naturally scented with real flowers and lavender essential oils for a calming effect.

Aromatherapy and children:

Aromatherapy can help calm a child who is anxious or under stress, reduce nausea, discomfort, and pain, and promote healthy sleep. I introduced aromatherapy to my children two years ago by adding diffusers into their bedrooms and am always looking for new ways to make it fun. I love that we can pull out some playdough to help calm them down or give them a mood boost while they get creative. Lavender has a very calming effect on most children, and it works wonders with mine.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN PLAYDOUGH

Playdough ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Natural color: 1 tablespoon or dried or fresh blueberries
  • Natural scent: 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds, 10 drops lavender essential oil.

In a large bowl, add your flour, salt, cream of tartar and coconut oil. Set aside.

In a saucepan, bring your water to a boil. Add your berries and lavender and let infuse into boiling water. Bring down to a simmer for 5 minutes. Let cool, and strain berries and lavender out over your large bowl with your other ingredients. Mix all ingredients completely, and kneed until you have the right consistency. Now you're ready to play!
